"BLAUER SCHURZ" / BLUE APRON, SOUTH TYROL, DATE UNKNOWN

The blue apron comes from South Tyrol, a mountain region in the extreme North of Italy near Austria. Made of very resistant cotton, it was traditionally given to children as a present on their first day of school and it was wore by men until old age as a sign of belonging to their community. It was used mostly as a work garment and also as a sack, a basket for the seeds, a towel or a bib to hold documents. Nowadays, it is still common to see men wearing blue aprons in the fields and in cities.

The blue apron entered the South Tyrolean tradition around 1920s, worn by Venetian textile traders. Previously, the work apron was white and made of linen.

"BLAUER SCHURZ" / GREMBIULE BLU, ALTO ADIGE, DATA SCONOSCIUTA

Il "blauer Schurz" è il tipico grembiule blu provieniente dall'Alto Adige realizzato in cotone molto resistente. Tradizionalmente veniva regalato ai bambini il primo giorno di scuola e veniva indossato dagli uomini fino alla vecchiaia come segno di appartenenza alla loro comunità. Era usato principalmente come indumento da lavoro e anche come sacco, raccoglitore per i semi, canovaccio. Al giorno d'oggi, è ancora comune vedere uomini che indossano grembiuli blu nei campi e nelle città.

Il grembiule blu è entrato nella tradizione altoatesina intorno agli anni ’20, portato da commercianti di tessuti veneti. Prima il grembiule da lavoro era bianco e di lino.
