This rolling pin is used to make tagliatelle (from "tagliare", Italian for "to cut"):

Tagliatelle are one of Italy's oldest pasta shapes. They come from the Middle Ages and were invented in Bologna.
They are made using many eggs and this is why they were traditionally eaten only on special occasions like marriages, festivities, diplomatic events.

Today, they are very popular in traditional "trattorias" in the North of Italy and they are served with meat or mushroom sauce.

Le tagliatelle rappresentano una delle più antiche tipologie di pasta. Nate del Medio Evo nell'area intorno a Bologna, sono state a lungo considerate una pasta per le grandi occasioni (matrimoni, festività, occasioni diplomatiche).
Oggi, continuano ad essere servite nelle trattorie, in particolare nel Nord e nel centro Italia, accompagnate con ragù di carne o di funghi.
